How to be a team player at work
A team spirit is a priceless asset that you should nurture and put to good use. People who are easy to work with are valued by their co-workers and their employer. Positive feedback guaranteed! But do you know what it takes to be a team player?
What we consider a team player
At Promutuel Insurance, there are a number of things that help our teams get along and work well together.
Of course, there’s always room for improvement, and that’s why we’re open to suggestions. Have a sports activity or a special event in mind? We’re all for it and we’ll help you set it up!
For us, the most important part of team spirit is the human aspect. Whether we’re dealing with co-workers, insured members, or future members, we respect each person as an individual.
We take our role as an employer very seriously so we can keep our employees for the long haul and help them reach their career goals!
We pull out all the stops to help you thrive, but you need to do your part to be a team player!
Job skills versus personal skills
Job skills and personal skills are two very different things. You might have the right knowledge but be difficult to work with.
Job skills: Experience
Jobs skills are a combination of competence and experience. You bring your job skills into play when you take everything you know and use it in your work to resolve a problem or get the job done right.
Personal skills: Attitude
Personal skills are about who you are: your actions, your values, and your attitude. These are things that affect all areas of your life in a big way.
Which skills do you need?
As an employee, you need both: job skills (experience) and personal skills (attitude).
Of course if you’re fresh out of school, you won't have much experience and will have to learn on the job. That’s normal and perfectly acceptable. It’s something we understand at Promutuel Insurance.
On the other hand, anyone can have a good attitude! Wherever you have thirty years of experience or none, it boils down to the same thing. If we can’t count on you to get along with your co-workers, you’ll have a hard time fitting in.
When you work remotely it’s hard to show your team spirit, but it’s important to make the effort!
Dealing with COVID-19 and telework
When you work remotely, it’s frustrating not to be able to meet up with co-workers, chat at the water cooler, or laugh at the team clown’s latest joke.
That’s why we’re stepping up as an employer to bring people together through a variety of events and to help you make the most of working remotely.
We encourage you to take part in:
- Virtual lunches for new employees
- Weekly online team meetings
- Birthday and hiring anniversary celebrations
- Sports and other virtual events and share your results with the group
Whether it’s to cheer someone up, pass on information, or work on a team project, message your co-workers to get to know them and show some kindness. We all have our grumpy moments, but grumpiness should not be a way of life!
5 easy steps to become a team player
If you’re happy by nature and have a strong team spirit, you’re already there. Keep it up! You’ll reap the benefits not only in your personal life but in your career too, as these are qualities recruiters look for.
At Promutuel Insurance, there are five things we want you to do:
1. Be positive
Having a positive attitude doesn’t mean dreaming of an imaginary world where everything is perfect. It’s about dealing with challenges and the highs and lows that come your way with a positive outlook and staying on track!
2. Be proactive: Find solutions to problems
Il Was there a problem with a quote for a client? That’s normal. These things happen. Thank the client for their patience while you look into the situation. Start digging for a solution and figure out what happened.
In short, be proactive. Focus on the solution, not the problem. Obsessing over what went wrong gets tiresome for your co-workers and your boss. And more importantly, it won’t make things any better!
3. Collaborate
Collaboration is the key to being a good team player at work! We need to be able to count on you, but also on your ability to collaborate with co-workers, especially when the going gets tough.
4. Show integrity and loyalty: Don’t point the finger
A mistake was made? A co-worker did something strange? You don’t need to broadcast these things to the whole world, just talk to the person concerned!
Here’s the bottom line: You’re all on the same team and need to stick together. Being quick to criticize others doesn’t help at all.
Be genuine in your concern. If something bothers you, talk to the person directly in a calm and polite manner.
The end goal is to foster a pleasant atmosphere at work for everyone!
5. Get involved in events
If you see your job as purely a 9 to 5 thing, maybe it’s time to reconsider. This might not be the right place for you.
At Promutuel Insurance, we know how to keep our people motivated and build relationships. One way we do that is through events.
We make a point of inviting everyone on our team to all the events we organize.
Getting involved gives you an opportunity to share your thoughts, smiles, and challenges and keep each other motivated—even from a distance.
Join a team that cheers you on
