Securing your RV: Everything you need to know about RV insurance
Why take out insurance on your RV?
Because it’s mandatory. Under Québec law, you must have third party liability insurance on all road vehicles. Why? You’ll be covered for damage if your vehicle injures someone or damages their property.
How do I properly insure my RV?
Your insurance premium will depend on a number of factors. When signing up for a new insurance policy, you’ll be asked the following questions:
- Do you use your RV as a seasonal residence?
- Do you store your RV for some of the year? If so, where?
- Do you use your RV to travel outside Quebec? To the United States or other parts of the world?
- Do you need any additional protections?
Insurers usually combine these additional protections into all-inclusive packages.
The most popular protections include:
- Collision and upset coverage: This covers damage caused to your RV due to a collision or upset.
- Coverage for risks other than collision and upset: This protects your RV in the event of robbery, fire, hail, broken windows, vandalism, and more.
For more comprehensive optional protections, we recommend the Procaravaning product* from Promutuel Insurance. For covered losses, Procaravaning reimburses you for expenses incurred due to damage to personal property inside your RV, repatriation fees (for towed vehicles), and other unexpected expenses (e.g., costs incurred from not being able to use your RV during your trip because it is uninhabitable following a covered loss). This includes additional costs required to maintain a reasonable standard of living and capped at a certain amount.
What criteria go into calculating the insurance premium?
- Your driver profile (age, sex, claim history, and driving record)
- Your RV profile (vehicle model and age)
- How often and where you use your vehicle
- Desired coverage
- Deductible amount
To get the best rate, you can also:
- Contact local RV clubs for information
- Combine multiple policies (auto, home, etc.) with your current insurer
