Score
Find out what driving data Appi records. And see how and when it turns the data into a score to help you improve your driving habits.
Every time you drive, Appi collects and analyzes different driving data to calculate your score:
- Speed (met or exceeded)
- Acceleration (smooth or sudden)
- Braking (soft or hard)
- Turns (smooth or sharp)
- Distracted driving (using your cellphone while stopped or moving)
- Travel times (night or day)
- Roads used (highways or secondary roads)
In addition to this driving data, Appi also records your mileage. However, distance travelled does not affect your driving score.
Note: When you first start, it takes a few days of driving with Appi for your score to stabilize.
For Appi, “excessive speed” starts at 11 km/h above the authorized limit. This margin was set to optimize use of the program and provide users with practical and insightful information to improve their driving habits.
The driving score calculation also takes into account how severe the speeding is, as well as the number of instances of excessive speeding in relation to the distance travelled.
Promutuel Insurance would like to remind you that speeding is one of the main causes of traffic accidents in Québec. So ease up on the gas pedal. You’ll help keep our roads safe and increase your score—and your Appi reward points!
For Appi, “sudden acceleration” is rapid acceleration of at least 8 km/h in less than 1 second.
The driving score calculation also takes into account how intense the recorded acceleration is, as well as the number of instances of sudden acceleration in relation to the distance travelled.
Promutuel Insurance would like to remind you that sudden acceleration significantly increases your chances of having an accident, so be careful and accelerate gradually. You’ll avoid accidents and increase your score—and your Appi reward points!
To detect a “sharp turn”, Appi analyzes the vehicle's angular speeds, that is, the angle of each turn combined, with the vehicule's speed, both at low and high speeds. Note that no turn can be considered “sharp” if it is less than 30 degrees or if the vehicle's speed is below 9 km/h.
Also keep in mind that the driving score calculation also takes into account how intense the recorded turn is, as well as the number of sharp turns in relation to the distance travelled.
Promutuel Insurance would like to remind you that sharp turns significantly increase your chances of having an accident, so be careful and take turns slowly. You’ll avoid accidents and increase your score — and your Appi reward points!
For Appi, “hard braking” is rapid vehicle deceleration where the speed decreases at least 8.1 km/h in a second.
The driving score calculation also takes into account how intense the recorded braking is, as well as the number of instances of hard braking in relation to the distance travelled.
Did you know? Hard braking is a very common cause of accidents. That’s why we encourage soft braking. Safe braking will also increase your score—and your Appi reward points. Think about it!
Of course, emergency braking is sometimes necessary to avoid an accident. Rest assured that Appi primarily considers your overall driving habits, i.e., how frequently you behave a certain way on the road. A single instance of emergency braking will not affect your score.
For Appi, “distracted driving” means using your cellphone while driving.
Appi analyzes different distracted driving events and how long they last:
- Phone calls using the cellphone speaker
- Phone calls using the vehicle speaker or a Bluetooth device
- Handling the phone, such as sending texts or actively using an app
Appi also considers these behaviours to be distracted driving even when you’re stopped, but penalizes you less than when you’re moving.
Be extra careful and don’t use your cellphone behind the wheel — even if you’re stopped!
No.
Appi primarily considers your overall driving habits, i.e., how frequently you behave a certain way on the road. A single instance of emergency braking or turning will not affect your overall score. Only the score for the trip in question will be affected.
At Promutuel Insurance, we know that emergency braking and turning is sometimes necessary to avoid an accident. We just hope you never have to perform such manoeuvres. Stay alert!
After each trip made, your data is analyzed and converted to a driving score. Depending on the setting you choose, it is processed at the end of the trip or when you connect to a Wi-Fi network.

Appi reward points are calculated for each trip based on your driving score. The calculation looks at a number of dynamic factors, such as the weekly average scores of all Appi users. But, unlike the mileage reported on your car insurance policy, Appi doesn’t consider your distance travelled.
While reward points are estimated for each of your trips, they will update in your app once a week. In the Rewards tab, you’ll be able to view your new point total, along with details on the points earned per trip.

The math is simple: 1 Appi point = 1¢.
Watch your points pile up week after week. And the more points you earn, the more gift cards there are to choose from. Watch how fast they add up:
100 points = $1
1,000 points = $10
5,000 points = $50
10,000 points = $100
What are you waiting for?
You’ll need to earn at least 100 Appi reward points to get your first e-gift card.

Trips
The Appi app automatically detects each of your trips. See here what driving data is analyzed and converted to reward points.
For each trip, Appi measures two things:
- Driving quality (braking, speed, acceleration, turns, and distracted driving)
- Driving conditions (travel time and type of roads)
This information is used to determine your driving score and your Appi reward points.
Yes.
The Appi application collects your driving data on every trip. That’s why you need to always have your cellphone when you drive.
Remember: Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents. We recommend stowing your cellphone somewhere you can’t reach so you won’t be tempted to use it while driving.
