Québec’s regions are a snowmobiler’s paradise, just waiting to be explored!
Every year, snowmobiling gains traction. Maybe you’re among the 800,000 Quebecers who enjoy this winter activity. What makes Québec, and especially the north, a true snowmobiler’s paradise? Whether you’re already a fan or simply looking to make the most of what winter has to offer, it’s yours to discover!
Snowmobiling in Québec brings people together
Quebecers have enjoyed snowmobiling since it was commercialized in the mid-1930s. Men currently make up 60% of snowmobilers, and women 40%. Despite what many may think, snowmobilers are mainly young adults, age 41 on average. And snowmobiling is far from a solitary activity—it’s a family-friendly adventure that can be enjoyed together as a group.
Although there are snowmobile enthusiasts throughout the province, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Montérégie, the Québec City area, and Abitibi-Témiscamingue are biggest regions for snowmobilers.
If this snapshot of Québec’s snowmobilers resonates with you, there’s a good chance you’re on the hunt for new trails to explore this winter. Good news: Québec has an extensive trail network, with more than 33,000 km of pure snow heaven! Here are some of the most exciting options.
Are you familiar with Québec’s trails?
Québec has many amazing places to explore, but some regions stand out from the rest. For example, in the north of the province, Abitibi and Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean are a snowy wonderland worth considering as you plan your next excursion.
One of Québec’s best circuits can be found at Parc national des Monts-Valin. Located in Saint-Fulgence, near Saguenay, the park is known for its federated trails and backcountry trails, abundant snow and breathtaking scenery. Nearby cottages, a convenience store, a gas station, a spa, and even a distillery make it the perfect destination for a one-of-a-kind snowmobile getaway. To make the most of it, consider staying a few days!
The Lac-Saint-Jean region is also packed with great circuits, like the one through Mont-Apica to the trails around Lac-Saint-Jean, with stunning mountain views of Réserve faunique des Laurentides. Alternatively, depart from Dolbeau-Mistassini—the blueberry capital—for La Passerelle du 49e, an incredible 402 km circuit in the heart of Parc régional des Grandes-Rivières du lac Saint-Jean. There, you’ll make lasting memories as you explore the enchanting boreal forest, trails crossing frozen rivers, and endless wilderness.
Or plan a longer excursion from Québec City, taking Trans-Québec Trail 3 north to Trail 83. This long loop goes through the Charlevoix region, all the way to Lac-Saint-Jean. Stop in Baie-Saint-Paul, known for its excellent restaurants, and explore picturesque villages like Saint-Siméon, Tadoussac, and Alma before travelling through the idyllic Réserve faunique des Laurentides.
Many seasoned riders consider Abitibi-Témiscamingue to be the snowmobile capital of Québec. With 3,700 km of trails, it’s easy to see why this is the ultimate destination. The Trans-Québec trails from the Outaouais, Saguenay, Lanaudière, and Mauricie regions make planning a multi-day trip a snap. If you’d rather keep it simple, take the 473 km route From Témis with Love, starting in Témiscaming. Experienced riders may prefer The Prospector from Val-d’Or (1,108 km), or The Big White Tour from Ville-Marie, famous for its 1,122 km route through snowy landscapes. There’s something for everyone! For those who love both the outdoors and tourism, The Abitibi (722 km) crosses the region and connects major cities, such as Val-d’Or, Amos, and Rouyn-Noranda.
No matter where your trip ends, make sure to bookmark or favourite the interactive snowmobile trail map from Fédération des clubs de motoneigistes du Québec. The map includes trail conditions, allowing you to plan your trips according to the weather, and it shows which trails are closed, so you can change your itinerary. It’s a must-have tool for snowmobilers!

Be prepared out there
- Whether you’re a hard-core enthusiast or a novice rider, always keep the following tips in mind before hitting the trail:
Perform a quick inspection of your snowmobile or rental to ensure everything is working properly before you set out. - Keep all necessary documents on hand, including your trail permit, driver’s licence, training certificate (mandatory for riders age 16 and 17), vehicle registration certificate, and civil liability insurance certificate.
- Check weather and trail conditions, and dress accordingly.
- When riding on federated trails, help protect farmland by staying on marked trails and avoiding shortcuts.
- Bring a first-aid kit, and let a loved one know where you’re going and for how long.
Stay protected out there
Did you know? Most snowmobile-related thefts involve the trailers used to transport them. Thieves monitor hotel parking lots for empty trailers, a sign that their owners are away. That’s why you should park your trailer near surveillance cameras and equip your vehicle with a good security system.
If you like taking long, multi-day trips, protecting your car and snowmobile is a smart move!
